Wii Fit - The Death of Video Game Exercise?

The public and media have picked up Wii-Fit as the iconic exergame - combining video games with exercise, but has the frenzy gone too far and put people off the idea of exergaming altogether?

When the Wii was first announced it was brilliant news for the industry. A huge multi-national company waking the world up to combining video games and exercise. The industry was young and needed the big cash boost of publicity and advertising awareness Nintendo could offer. The fighting between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo over the newest consoles furthered the interest of the press and public and things could not have been brighter.

Harvesting energy from revolving doors

Remember the Matrix movie and the way humans became grown heat-producing plants to provide for their machine lords? The word “harvesting” gives me the crawls, but luckily harvesting in this world is for our own benefit and energy dependence. Interesting ideas so far are the energy harvesting from gym users or vibrations from trains and human steps. Kinetic energy is everywhere, it is just a matter of how to harness the damn thing and convert it to useful energy.

However there are some nice opportunities where kinetic energy presents itself in more organised ways and can be collected more easily. Case in point is Fluxxlab’s revolving door harvester. It can be an all new installation or a conversion to an existing door. Unsuspecting humans rotate the spindle, that then rotates a magnetic wheel, that in turn creates current flow in stationary wire coils. Simple and effective.

Dream Machine

Incase you were under the misconception that only Wii promoted fitness, they you need to be introduced to The Dream Machine. Inventor Robert James-Herbert has created the world's first multi-modal physiointeractive computer game control simulation system. In simple terms, it's a contraption that gives you both rotational and four-way pan tilt action to play any game on any platform. It was first demonstrated at E3 in 2005. The players need to use their entire bodies in order to control the virtual car, bike, plane, or skateboard they see on screen. Its fully adjustable for all ages and fitness levels and costs $1,700.

* Steadily increasing global energy consumption causes growing numbers of environmental problems.
* The United States and other countries throughout the world often cannot or are not willing to comply with the Kyoto agreements on CO2 reductions.
* For this reason, societal and political pressure to develop products with lower energy consumption is building.
* Volatility of oil prices highlights the dependence of the United States and other nation’s vulnerable economies on this precious oil. This situation is not likely to improve.

Exergames Fitness

The Green Gym

By generating electricity and conserving space and energy, The Green Microgym is one of the only fitness facilities in the world running on some of its own power. Opened a gym in Portland, Oregon that uses a combination of solar and human power and is just as comfortable and effective as any other gym.

Interactivity and new media

Interactivity has become a key term for number of new media use options evolving from the rapid dissemination of Internet access point, the digitalization of the media, and media convergence. In 1984, Rice defined the new media as communication technologies that enable or facilitate user-to-user interactivity and interactivity between user and information. [22] Such as Internet replaces the "one-to-many" model of traditional mass communication with the possibility of a "many-to-many" web of communication. Any individual with the appropriate technology can now produce his or her online media and include images, text, and sound about whatever he or she chooses. [23] So the new media with technology convergence shifts the model of mass communication, and radically shapes the ways we interact and communicate with one another. Vin Crosbie described three communications media in “What is new media?”. He saw Interpersonal media as “one to one”, Mass media as “one to many” and, finally New Media as “many to many”.

Human Dynamo

Human Power is going to be a portal where many forms of Human Power are represented.
At first we will concentrate on exercise machines that generate electricity.
The Human Dynamo has a goal to be the first commercial machine to do so.
There are two ways to do this.

An "off grid" system would charge batteries to power an inverter to make 120 volts AC. The gym could connect its entertainment system, TV's and lights to this module.
A "grid tie" system would be wired directly to the electrical panel.

Gamercize

Exercise motion is detected in the same way calorie counter and exercise computers count repetitions on individual exercise machines. When exercise motion ceases, for the period of time dependent on the difficulty setting, the game controller input is stopped. Any game can be used as this approach does not interact directly with the game control.

Exercise machines are only suitable when balance can be maintained and hands are free to operate game controllers. For this reason treadmills and rowing machines are not suitable and could be dangerous.

Power from blood could lead to 'human batteries'

A device that produces electricity from blood could be used to turn people into "human batteries".

Researchers in Japan are developing a method of drawing power from blood glucose, mimicking the way the body generates energy from food.

Theoretically, it could allow a person to pump out 100 watts - enough to illuminate a light bulb. ....more....

New Media- Interactive Instalations

is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century.

Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulable, networkable, dense, compressible, and impartial.[1]

Human Energy Harvest

"Power to the people" was a popular rallying cry among anti-establishment activists in the 1960s.

"Power from the people" appears to be the latter-day equivalent.

The theory behind the slogan is that humans move around a lot, and the only result of all this motion is that the humans end up in a different place.

According to some, this isn't good enough.

EXERGAMING-----

Exergaming (a portmanteau of "exercise" and "gaming") is a term used for video games that also provide exercise. Exergames have one element of exercise and one element of gaming. The "gaming" aspect is a short form for video gaming. "Exergames" sub divide into two main implementations, those with a game specifically designed to use an exercise input device and those implementations using a genre of, or a generic game.

Games fit in to the category of entertainment, and similarly Exergames are a category of Exertainment (formed from "exercise" and "entertainment"). Exertainment includes one aspect of innovation or entertainment to an exercise work out.

JoyXercise-- Art & Harvest

JoyXercise,
It is time to interact, power from the people!

“JoyXercise”, is drawn upon the fields of “New Media Art- Interactive Installation”, “Exergaming” and the “harvesting of human energy”
My project consists in hacking already existing Exergaming hardware and give it a new artistic meaning in the form of Video & Sound Art plus LED Lighting design. It also contains a web conference feature: as the user exercises, he or she switches between the local source and the one happening over a distant/close location at the same time.
The media content to be played refers to environmental awareness focusing on the area of “human power harvesting” 1 . The JoyXercise can be totally sustainable by the power-harvested from the user. I intend to pass a clear message mixing digital culture, Art and Technology, Science and Ecology.
