Potenco

The Potenco PCG1 pull-cord generator creates electricity for portable gadgets with far greater efficiency than hand-cranked devices. The PCG1 is the geek-chic version of a generator for the developing world. It weighs 14 ounces, has both an internal NiMh battery and a mini-USB output jack and can convert 2 minutes of effort into 40 minutes of cellphone talk time.

inDOOR Energy Harvester

The inDOOR Energy Harvester is a low cost, low profile mechanism that converts rotational kinetic energy from opening and closing a door to usable electricity.

It contains a circuit to store this electricity, measure what is produced and dynamically graph and monitor its progress from a website.
The stored electricity can then be used for any of the buildings off grid needs, such as emergency sign-age, cameras or lighting.

The inDOOR Energy Harvester is a part of the unconscious power plant project, which seeks to bring awareness to the potential for energy generation and usage as a part of daily routine.

If we start looking at doors as a source to contribute a small slice of the energy we consume everyday, then eventually the rest of our actions and environment becomes possible too.

Harnessing Human Energy With Floor Tiles

“Imagine a nightclub where dancers generate the venues electricity just from the impact of their steps. With Redmonds innovative flooring system, this vision of a human-powered energy source may be close to a reality. The floor tiles, cast in durable concrete and recycled glass, are fitted with piezoelectric brass-reinforced ceramic plates covered in nickel electrodes. With the impact of each footstep, a metal pointer inside the tile compresses the ceramic plate, generating an electric impulse. The resulting voltage activates four LED lights, visible through the glass surface, allowing energy-generating participants to see the power of their steps.” Source

Harvesting energy from revolving doors

Remember the Matrix movie and the way humans became grown heat-producing plants to provide for their machine lords? The word “harvesting” gives me the crawls, but luckily harvesting in this world is for our own benefit and energy dependence. Interesting ideas so far are the energy harvesting from gym users or vibrations from trains and human steps. Kinetic energy is everywhere, it is just a matter of how to harness the damn thing and convert it to useful energy.

However there are some nice opportunities where kinetic energy presents itself in more organised ways and can be collected more easily. Case in point is Fluxxlab’s revolving door harvester. It can be an all new installation or a conversion to an existing door. Unsuspecting humans rotate the spindle, that then rotates a magnetic wheel, that in turn creates current flow in stationary wire coils. Simple and effective.

* Steadily increasing global energy consumption causes growing numbers of environmental problems.
* The United States and other countries throughout the world often cannot or are not willing to comply with the Kyoto agreements on CO2 reductions.
* For this reason, societal and political pressure to develop products with lower energy consumption is building.
* Volatility of oil prices highlights the dependence of the United States and other nation’s vulnerable economies on this precious oil. This situation is not likely to improve.

The Green Gym

By generating electricity and conserving space and energy, The Green Microgym is one of the only fitness facilities in the world running on some of its own power. Opened a gym in Portland, Oregon that uses a combination of solar and human power and is just as comfortable and effective as any other gym.

Human Dynamo

Human Power is going to be a portal where many forms of Human Power are represented.
At first we will concentrate on exercise machines that generate electricity.
The Human Dynamo has a goal to be the first commercial machine to do so.
There are two ways to do this.

An "off grid" system would charge batteries to power an inverter to make 120 volts AC. The gym could connect its entertainment system, TV's and lights to this module.
A "grid tie" system would be wired directly to the electrical panel.

Power from blood could lead to 'human batteries'

A device that produces electricity from blood could be used to turn people into "human batteries".

Researchers in Japan are developing a method of drawing power from blood glucose, mimicking the way the body generates energy from food.

Theoretically, it could allow a person to pump out 100 watts - enough to illuminate a light bulb. ....more....

Human Energy Harvest

"Power to the people" was a popular rallying cry among anti-establishment activists in the 1960s.

"Power from the people" appears to be the latter-day equivalent.

The theory behind the slogan is that humans move around a lot, and the only result of all this motion is that the humans end up in a different place.

According to some, this isn't good enough.
