Beat-Bike v.1 is a bicycle-controlled drum machine.
Sensors mounted on a bicycle frame are activated by spinning the bicycle's front wheel.

Once activated, they trigger a momentary sounding of a single drum sound- kick drum, snare, tom-tom, and “disco-bleep” from a kids' toy drum machine. As the wheel spins, the sensors are triggered in a sequence which becomes an audible, repeating drum beat.

The rider controls the tempo of the beat as well as the sequence of sounds from controls mounted on the handlebars.

Because the sounds are controlled by riding a bicycle, Beat-Bike v.1 rewards exercise and coordination with funky outer-space disco beats. And it's fun!

The public and media have picked up Wii-Fit as the iconic exergame - combining video games with exercise, but has the frenzy gone too far and put people off the idea of exergaming altogether?

When the Wii was first announced it was brilliant news for the industry. A huge multi-national company waking the world up to combining video games and exercise. The industry was young and needed the big cash boost of publicity and advertising awareness Nintendo could offer. The fighting between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo over the newest consoles furthered the interest of the press and public and things could not have been brighter.

Remember the Matrix movie and the way humans became grown heat-producing plants to provide for their machine lords? The word “harvesting” gives me the crawls, but luckily harvesting in this world is for our own benefit and energy dependence. Interesting ideas so far are the energy harvesting from gym users or vibrations from trains and human steps. Kinetic energy is everywhere, it is just a matter of how to harness the damn thing and convert it to useful energy.

However there are some nice opportunities where kinetic energy presents itself in more organised ways and can be collected more easily. Case in point is Fluxxlab’s revolving door harvester. It can be an all new installation or a conversion to an existing door. Unsuspecting humans rotate the spindle, that then rotates a magnetic wheel, that in turn creates current flow in stationary wire coils. Simple and effective.

Inventor Robert James-Herbert has created the world's first multi-modal physiointeractive computer game control simulation system. In simple terms, it's a contraption that gives you both rotational and four-way pan tilt action to play any game on any platform. It was first demonstrated at E3 in 2005. The players need to use their entire bodies in order to control the virtual car, bike, plane, or skateboard they see on screen. Its fully adjustable for all ages and fitness levels and costs $1,700.

When exercise motion ceases, for the period of time dependent on the difficulty setting, the game controller input is stopped. Any game can be used as this approach does not interact directly with the game control.

Exercise machines are only suitable when balance can be maintained and hands are free to operate game controllers. For this reason treadmills and rowing machines are not suitable and could be dangerous.

“JoyXercise”, is drawn upon the fields of “New Media Art- Interactive Installation”, “Exergaming” and the “harvesting of human energy”
My project consists in hacking already existing Exergaming hardware and give it a new artistic meaning in the form of Video & Sound Art plus LED Lighting design. It also contains a web conference feature: as the user exercises, he or she switches between the local source and the one happening over a distant/close location at the same time.
The media content to be played refers to environmental awareness focusing on the area of “human power harvesting” 1 . The JoyXercise can be totally sustainable by the power-harvested from the user. I intend to pass a clear message mixing digital culture, Art and Technology, Science and Ecology.
